Fill out the Questionnaire

I am no longer adding people to the online profiles because I lack the time and motivation to do so. However, I would still like to collect this information for my own personal research. I am not adding new profiles at the time being, but feel free to fill out a questionnaire and/or send a picture to add to my knowledge. As a person who often speaks as a representative of the gothic subculture, it's essential for me to have as comprehensive a view as possible.

If you fill out this form, the information is sent only to me. If you would like to fill out a questionnaire to be posted online, go to http://www.livejournal.com/community/gothsubculture. The questionnaire below is more comprehensive and your information is kept confidential. The livejournal questionnaire is shorter and your responses can be viewed by anyone.

Please answer all questions honestly and completely with as many details as possible. To be useful to my studies, you must fill out this entire questionnaire 100% honestly (that includes giving me your real name and a valid e-mail address). Your privacy and anonymity is guaranteed; currently, this information will only be seen by me. If I feel an overwhelming desire to begin adding new profiles, you will be contacted for permission if I choose to add yours. Contact me with any questions at

Here's a few guidelines to make it worth both of our time:

  1. Know what you're talking about. I am looking for people involved in the "gothic" scene. That doesn't mean you have to label yourself gothic. It does mean that in some way I must believe you are not just going through a phase.

  2. Answer everything very thoroughly. People with more detailed answers are far more helpful than those who respond with one sentence. If you say you like reading, put what kind of books you like, your favorite authors. If you say you play an instrument, write which one, how long you've been doing it, what you like about it and so forth. If you are going to college, state your major and minor. You get the idea. Details, details details!

  3. Look over your form once you're done for spelling or grammar errors before you submit it. It doesn't have to be perfect, but do me the favor of double checking.

  4. Be able to send me a picture of yourself. This is just for my own archives, so that I can gain a better idea of the diversity of the gothic look and style. It is not required, but it is helpful. Once you have submitted the questionnaire, send the picture as an e-mail attachment to . I'd like a fairly full length, (not just a head shot), picture of only you. I've sought the "what I look like when I'm dressed to go out to a club" look, but I'll leave it up to you as to what kind of a picture to send.

Gangs are defined as "a group of people who have a common name, sign, or identifying symbol, and who engage in criminal activity." By this definition, do you consider Goths a gang? Why or why not?
